Some wines impress through elegance. Others through sheer concentration. Château Beauséjour (Duffau-Lagarrosse) 2016 manages both, combining extraordinary depth and structure with the precision and mineral tension of its exceptional Saint-Émilion terroir.

Classified Premier Grand Cru Classé, the estate occupies a remarkable limestone-rich site on the Saint-Émilion plateau and its adjoining slopes. The combination of limestone and clay is central to the wine's identity: clay contributes richness and volume, while limestone brings freshness, definition and a distinctive mineral character. The result is a wine of immense substance that remains remarkably composed.

The 2016 vintage is one of the great modern Bordeaux vintages, and Beauséjour's interpretation is particularly compelling. Made predominantly from old-vine Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, the wine reflects the estate's ability to combine ripe, concentrated fruit with fine-grained tannins, aromatic complexity and exceptional length.

A remarkable vintage

The 2016 growing season demanded patience. A wet spring replenished the soils before a warm, dry summer allowed the grapes to ripen slowly. Favourable conditions towards harvest helped preserve freshness while achieving excellent phenolic maturity.

At Beauséjour, the result is a wine that balances two seemingly opposing qualities: power and refinement. It has the concentration and tannic framework to age for decades, yet its fruit remains pure and its texture remarkably seamless.

Tasting notes

Appearance

Deep garnet-purple in colour, with the intensity and concentration expected of a serious, age-worthy Saint-Émilion.

Nose

The bouquet is layered and intensely perfumed. Blackcurrant, blackberry and dark cherry sit alongside violets, lavender and hints of crushed stone. With air, more complex notes emerge: graphite, smoke, liquorice, dark spice, forest floor and fine leather. The aromatic profile is both powerful and lifted, with floral and mineral nuances preventing the dark fruit from becoming heavy or one-dimensional.

Palate

Full-bodied and concentrated, the wine builds gradually across the palate. The initial impression is of plush, ripe dark fruit, followed by a deeper core of black cherry, cassis and plum. Fine, assertive tannins provide considerable structure, while fresh acidity and the estate's limestone character bring tension and precision.

The texture is particularly impressive: rich and enveloping, yet without excessive weight. The fruit, tannins, acidity and oak are integrated into a coherent whole, with savoury and mineral notes adding complexity as the wine develops in the glass.

Finish

Exceptionally long and persistent, with dark fruit, graphite, crushed stone, liquorice and subtle spice lingering well beyond the final sip. The finish reflects both the wine's concentration and its underlying freshness.

International Ratings:

‍Jeb Dunnuck 100/100

Antonio Galloni, Vinous 99/100

James Suckling 98/100

The Wine Advocate 97/100

Decanter 96/100

Wine Enthusiast 96/100

The consensus is clear: this is a wine of exceptional concentration, purity, structure and balance. Jeb Dunnuck highlighted its extraordinary richness and depth without heaviness, while Antonio Galloni praised its intensity and seamless integration. Jane Anson of Decanter emphasised the relationship between limestone's austerity and the seductive power of clay.

Cellaring Potential:

A wine of this calibre is built for the long term. Critics have projected drinking windows extending well into the 2040s and beyond, with some suggesting potential longevity into the 2050s and 2060s under excellent cellar conditions.

Food pairing and service Suggestions:

This is a wine for dishes with the depth and flavour to match its concentration. Roast saddle of lamb, beef fillet, venison, slow-cooked short ribs and richly flavoured game are natural partners. It also works beautifully with wild mushrooms, truffle and carefully prepared dishes featuring herbs and earthy flavours.

Serve at approximately 16–18°C. Decant carefully for at least 2 hours and taste as you go.
