Sichel Sauternes

2022

Arguably the best-value Sauternes there is!

Ready, but will improve

A sweet wine that will be wonderful if cellared for a while, but equally delicious (despite different) in its youth.

Wine Description:

An exceptional Sauterne of outstanding value from the Sichel family. A blend of 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc from 50 year old vines where Botrytis is encouraged to dehydrate the grapes. This Sauterne has been aged for 10 to 12 months in oak.

Tasting Note:

A nose of dried apricot, grapefuit and citrus. The palate is fresh with expertly balanced acidty, citrus peel and honey.

Maison Sichel was initially set up as a buying office in Bordeaux in 1883 and has very much remained a family business since then, with seven generations succeeding one another. The transformation from buying office to trading company to producer really took place with the acquisition of Chateau Palmer in 1938. Extremely dilapidated at the time, the Sichel family worked tirelessly to build the reputation of the estate, successfully cementing Palmer as one of the flagship estates of the Medoc today. In 1961 they acquired Chateau Angludet, in 2002 Chateau Argadens and most recently in 2020, Chateau Daviaud. Today, the total vineyard area under Maison Sichel spans 350 hectares.

Food Pairing:

Try it with almond tart or cheesecake (especially when young) foie gras or blue cheese.

Andrew's personal note: We have also served a small Sichel Sauternes as an aperitivo with salty cheese before a lunch and it was absolutely delicious
