ColleMassari is the most important and largest estate of the Montecucco appellation in central Tuscany. The vineyards are located on the Montecucco hill that gives name to the appellation. The vines on the Montecucco hill are the oldest Sangiovese vines of the DOCG

Only one wine ever bears the name of the estate – and there is a reason for this. The Montecucco Rosso Riserva is the centrepiece of production: the wine that most directly expresses the philosophy of the estate. Italian passion meets Swiss precision – is how the Tipa Bertarelli family itself describes its approach. In the glass, this is convincing every year anew. 80% Sangiovese, 10% Ciliegiolo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon – grapes from vineyards on sandstone, marl and clay at 300 metres. Spontaneous fermentation on natural yeast in temperature-controlled steel tanks, followed by 16 months of ageing: the Sangiovese in 40-hectolitre oak barrels, Ciliegiolo and Cabernet in 500-litre French oak Liters.

Montecucco is located between Montalcino, and Scansano, and benefits from microclimates similar to both of those regions. The Castello ColleMassari winery is located in Cinigiano in the foothills of Monte Amiata, about 1050ft above sea level.

The 2022 Montecucco Rosso Riserva is dark and brooding, with an herbal thrust up front, giving way to nuances of crushed stone and woodland berries. It is peppery and fresh, with silken textures for contrast and a wave of ripe red and black fruit that slowly saturates the palate. A fine layer of minerality lines the palate, mingling with fine tannins and a tart raspberry resonance as the 2022 tapers off long and youthfully tense, leaving an air of lavender to linger
