ColleMassari is the most important and largest estate of the Montecucco appellation in central Tuscany. The vineyards are located on the Montecucco hill that gives name to the appellation. The vines on the Montecucco hill are the oldest Sangiovese vines of the DOCG

  • Vinification & ageing: the Riserva undergoes lengthy oak maturation (large wood barrels, extended ageing) that delivers structure, integration, and the firmness needed for ageing.
  • Tasting profile: on the nose, expect ripe dark and red fruit (cherry, plum), hints of spice, dark chocolate, subtle herbs and earthiness. Touches of dried cherries, cedar/wood, perhaps a smoky or tar-like austerity depending on evolution
  • On the palate it shows balanced structure, vibrant acidity, firm but ripe tannins, medium to full body, and a persistent, slightly savory finish with good interplay between freshness and power, making it versatile with food yet structured enough for cellaring.
  • The 2019 Montecucco Sangiovese Riserva Poggio Lombrone opens slowly in the glass. It entices with a whiff of sweet spices and dusty rose before giving way to blackberries and hints of cocoa. This is pure elegance, with streamlined acidity and ripe wild berry fruits that envelop the palate. A web of fine-grained tannins remains, along with a saturation of primary fruits and a tinge of spice. The 2019 tapers off with dramatic length and concentration. This is still a baby and possesses the balance for a long and fruitful evolution.

    Decanting recommendations:

As does the winemaker, we too recommend decanting the 2020 for 1 hour to 1.5 hours

Goes well with game, as e.g. local preparations of wild boar, roast, braised and stewed red meats, and medium aged cheese.
