Our 2023 ratings - A comparison with James Suckling

How did we rate the 2023 Primeur vintage, and how do our ratings compare to renowned critic James Suckling?

Whilst we didn't rate any of the wines as a potential 100 point wine, we rated 7 wines at potential 99 pointers, of which James Suckling believes 3 of them can be potential pointers.

*Note our points are in the red column, whilst James Suckling in the grey column.

Potential 99 Points
Besides Chateau Canon, Chateau Margaux and Chateau Montrose, James Suckling awarded the below wines as potential 100 points to:

Chateau Pavie

Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Chateau Pavie Mac-Quin

Awarded a potential over 95 points

Our highest rated white wine and Sauternes (we didn't rate Chateau D'Yquem) feature in this group, the the Pavillon Blanc de Margaux really impressing. Stand-out wines in this group are Alter Ego, Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal & Croix Canon which should we released at well under the €100 per bottle. These wines really punched way above their weight!

93-95 Points

A couple of standout wines once again. 2nd Growth Margaux Chateau Durfort Vivens ranks highly as does the Chateau Pavie-Macquin. The Pavie-Macquin was particularly enjoyable and polished. It has been receiving big points lately and James Suckling thinks the 2023 could even be a potential 100 pointer (Though I'm not convinced it's a potential perfect wine, I do believe it is extremely sophisticated) - Moreover, this wine is often sold at less than €100 retail price, so it's definitely on my radar.

92-94 points

Some interesting points

Chateau Lascombes has received some big points and is now under the guidance of Axel Heinz (ex Masseto). This 2nd Growth Margaux has definite importvements in quality and may be the dark horse investment this year? It's probably quite safe to say that this will be a new era for Chateau Lascombes.

Some wines that seem to have punched above their weight are Chateau Giscours (incredibly beautiful this year), Chateau Lagrange, Chateau La Gaffeliere

92-93 Points

Interesting to note that Chateau Angludet received their highest score from James Suckling and has already been released at 10% less than last years price. Other Stand Out wines are Chateau Phélan Ségur, Chateau Tronquoy Lalande Blanc is an awesome white wine at an incredible price.

Unfortunately we did not manage to rate Péssac Léognan appellation, so we will rely on James Suckling's scores:
